Do Not Resuscitate

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) is a legal order that indicates a person does not want to receive resuscitation efforts and possibly other medical efforts. It’s really important that a DNR order is readily available and on file with your parents’ doctor. I was just speaking with a doctor who sees many patients who in normal circumstances have no chance of survival without medical intervention, but are left stagnating in beds hooked up to machines. In several instances, these were homeless patients with no identifiable next-of-kin, so the medical staff was unable to do anything other than “treat” them. Some institutions have entire rooms set up with patients in similar states.

There are several ways a DNR can be put in place:

Use a form provided by a doctor

Write your wishes down yourself

Call your health department or state department on aging to get a form
