What had I gotten myself into?

Chapter 6

Dawson

Watching Sean volunteer and shoot himself with that tracker was quite impressive. I knew he was a good kid, but this put him over the top. I’m not sure that I could have done that and taken one for the team.

It was slow going for the first little while, and we couldn’t see his progress until he was at the gate.

The guards appeared to let him in, but from that point, the fence and buildings obscured him from sight.

“All right, who’s going to volunteer to stay and monitor Sean and those guys?”

Kyle raised his hand. “I can stay. I know you don’t trust me yet, but I have to do something to try and get my kids back.”

“Understood. Doug will take the other spot, and then we’ll come back with reinforcements in the morning to relieve you.”

“Yeah, I think we’re just looking at an outpost. He’s got more men in that one place than we have in all four places combined. When he calls in from here to the bigger group, we’re going to be looking at an army of the living.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of, so I’m going to get on the radio and see if I can get a hold of Patti. Her group isn’t large, but maybe she can round up a few more guys who would be willing to have some fun.” I checked my watch. It was getting late, so Brad and I would have to hustle back before dark.

“You both feel comfortable on what to watch for?” I questioned one last time.

“We’ve got this.” Kyle’s head bobbed up and down.

“Okay. Use the radio sparingly, and only on that one channel if you have to.” I took a last look through the binoculars before handing them to Doug. “Keep him alive. I don’t want to have to explain to Andi why he’s not coming home.”

We’d gone a lot slower with Kyle and Sean, but Brad and I weren’t trying to be quiet now. There hadn’t been any guards or lookouts, and while I wouldn’t be stupid in thinking that we might not get caught, it wasn’t as much of a worry as when we’d been approaching unknown territory.

Instead of driving straight home, we needed to let Linc know what had happened, and for him to be on the lookout for danger in the direction of Cleveland and Chattanooga.

We pulled up to the building they were putting the solar panels in, but some sort of make-believe battle was in progress.

Caleb and Finn had small swords pointed at each other. They weren’t using them to engage in battle; instead, they were flinging words back and forth.

I walked over to where Linc was stifling a laugh and waited for one of them to fall down dead.

“What are they using to kill each other?” I whispered.

“Wands. They’re having a battle with spells, and it appears that they’re just making up words that sound worse than the ones before.” He shrugged. “They seem to know what the other means to counter it with a spell of their own.
