CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Sumner’s prediction regarding the siege soon proved to be correct. As Morgan stood on the walls overlooking the countryside, he could see the lizardman contingent beginning to withdraw. The other warriors and grunts had tried to raise an objection, but the lizardmen turned on them in a fury and quickly forced a gap between the two camps. It seemed with Yfel out of the picture, there wasn’t much to hold the lizardmen to this current war.

With the lizardmen withdrawing from the siege, the other forces hadn’t mounted a sustained attack against the walls in three days. Most of the damage and the bodies had been removed during the lull, leaving behind only a few broken war machines and a lot of torn-up ground.

The defenders of Themis were quite pleased with their respite. From the sounds of laughter and music coming from within the city, a small festival was apparently going on in one of the city’s squares. Only a skeleton crew of guards was manning the city walls, keeping a close eye out for any activities by the grunts.

Kore joined Morgan on the wall, looking out on all the devastation from the weeks of siege. Morgan was taken aback at the sight of her. It was one of the few times he could recall not seeing her in her traveling outfit. She was dressed in a flowing green blouse with leather pants and boots, her signature green scarf nowhere to be found. The wind, blowing in off of the sea, made her hair billow around her.

“It is amazing how much can happen in such a short time,” she said, staring down at the retreating lizardman army.

“Yes and no. While this particular incident came and went over the course of a month, I have been reviewing other incidents. I have the distinct feeling that this has been developing for quite a while now,”

Morgan said, thinking back to his latest visit to Sumner’s library.

“I’ve been thinking the same thing,” Kore agreed.

“Some of the incidents that we were sent out to investigate were just too pat… almost as if we were being tested to see how quickly we could respond and whom we would send out.”

“It’s probable that whoever is behind all of this has had at least a year to get their agents into place,”

Morgan said, tugging on his beard.

“That is a reasonable hypothesis. Whether Yfel’s master has been in our world for at least a year, or whether someone has been working behind the scenes for him is unknown. There’s too little direct evidence at this time,” Kore summed up for Morgan.

Morgan shook his head and smiled. “That’s what I like about you, Kore. You keep me honest. You’re right, no sense in jumping to conclusions yet. Let’s see what kinds of evidence we can get then make a decision.”

“That’s my advice,” Kore agreed. “I have my personal thoughts on this matter, but I would need to do more research before announcing them. It’s possible that there are perfectly good explanations for my concerns.
