Carrielle insisted on spending all of the next day devoted to planning. Enlinei only half-listened to her friend’s excited chatter. “So far we’ve planned that the party will take place in the clearing by our barn. My sister and I will design banners to hang from the trees, and people can be free to bring presents, food, dessert... Oh! And we need to have a sword-fighting contest!”

“A sword-fighting contest?”

“Yes yes. Amonai is the best swordsman in Arhang, maybe in all of Alonili, so they say. Maybe some underdog can put him in his place,” Carrielle said with a laugh.

“And Arthwell is leading the games, I assume?”

“Oh yes. There is no other way to do it. He’s so weird, but he’s great!”

“It’s true.”

Enlinei’s gaze wandered out the window of Carrielle’s bedroom and into the woods beyond the farm. In the distance, she thought she saw a shadowy shape among the trees. It was only a deer, but she could not take her eyes off of the still, antlered creature.

“Any other brilliant ideas?” Carrielle asked.

Enlinei snapped back to the present. “No, I think your plans sound good. And nothing like spending some good time with friends to help things return to normal, right?”

“Exactly,” Carrielle said.
