Chapter 6

As usual Allan woke early the next morning. He needed very little sleep, which was something he always quoted when interviewed in American magazines. He felt, rightly or wrongly, this was one of the attributes that had helped him become such a success. His business interests were many and varied and only he knew the exact extent of his wealth and power. He enjoyed life, especially if there was a challenge to be faced, whether it was business or sexual. His first thought on this particular morning was that somehow he was going to get to the bottom of the mystery of Penrick Lodge.

He knew beyond any shadow of doubt that there was something strange going on. Last night, watching Kate spasming in helpless ecstasy as she’d climaxed for the third forbidden time and then seeing her punished by Lucinda as she tried desperately to bring James to a climax with her mouth, he’d known that there was a sub-text to everything that was happening.

He’d been excited, as any man would have been, and he was enjoying his stay, but he didn’t like mysteries. This was definitely not one of James and Lucinda’s usual erotic weekends and he decided that now was as good a time as any to start trying to discover the truth that lay behind his invitation.

When he got downstairs James, much to Allan’s surprise, was coming out of his study. ‘You’re not usually an early bird,’ Allan remarked.

James looked slightly awkward. ‘Couldn’t sleep,’ he said abruptly.

‘Strange, in your place I’d have been exhausted.’

‘Perhaps I was overstimulated,’ said James, trying to smile.

‘Working on a book at the moment?’ asked Allan. He wasn’t particularly interested but he knew how much James’ work mattered to him.

‘No. Well, that is, yes, but of course I’m not really working on it until the honeymoon’s over,’ said James. Hearing the other man’s awkward words Allan knew that he was on to something. It seemed that asking about James’ work had been the right thing to do. ‘Your usual sort of novel?’ He tried to keep his voice casual, anxious not to reveal his sudden keen interest.

‘Not exactly,’ confessed James.

‘Going more commercial are you?’ Allan asked.

‘Why do you say that?’ snapped James.

Allan held up his hands, palms forward. ‘Hey, I didn’t mean to offend you. It seems a sensible move to make. I remember last time we met you said that you needed some money to do this place up. Writing a more commercial book seems a sensible way of getting a big advance. Have you managed that?’

‘I really don’t want to discuss it,’ said James stiffly.

‘Okay, fine,’ said Allan. ‘Remember though, I’ve got plenty of contacts in the publishing world in the States if you do come up with the goods.’

‘You have?’ Now it was James’ turn to be interested. ‘The thing is,’ he said, lowering his voice, ‘Lucinda doesn’t want me discussing this new book with anyone at all until it’s finished.’

‘But she’s your agent; surely she wants to get the best deal possible for you?’ said Allan.
