Chapter 19 - Magic Doesn’t Mean Disappearing

Scout

“I would like two glasses of water, please.” Scout smiled at the fing who ran the shop. He knew Bob and figured he’d be the easiest shop owner to visit.

“Scout, I’m working, you can’t just barge in my store every time you want something. There’s a cafe across the way for things like water.” The tall, hairy creature sneered down at him.

Undaunted, Scout smiled. “But Mom said to trust you. You know there’s a lot of creatures around The Center, and not all will talk to kids. You know Mom and know she’s good for the bill. Horax is off at the practice fields, so he can’t go to the shops with me. That leaves you.” He smiled again, opening his eyes wide. He tried to look as much like Beaver as he could; that ven of his was the cutest thing he knew.

Bob glared. “When you grow up, boy, you go into politics, just like your mom. You want water?”

“I want a water. I’m also getting something for Ms. Kor, my teacher.”

The big fing rolled his eyes. “Two waters coming up, and I’m putting it on a bill. Your mom will be paying up, young Scout.”

“Yes, sir!”

It took the larger creature only a few minutes to gather two glasses of water, and he smiled when he bent to hand them to Scout. Once his hands were free, he gave Beaver a pet. Scout knew most of Bob’s grousing was all for show.

“Okay, Beaver, back up to the trees with you. There are too many people milling about. Watch from above.”

Scout knew Mom liked having an extra pair of eyes on him. Though the ven couldn’t communicate with words, if anything happened to him, the ven would fight to help Scout, or follow whoever took him. Then Beaver would find Mom and lead her to Scout. She was an amazing companion.

When he got to the table, Ms. Kor wasn’t there. She must’ve had to go to the restroom. We’ve been playing for a while.

Scout put Ms. Kor’s glass down on the table and found a game to play while he waited. Over the intercom, they announced the start of the Practice Field Competitions. Horax wasn’t in the first round, but Scout did a quick search for Ms. Kor. I really want to get down there. All the competitions are fun to watch.

He finished his game and checked the time. It had been almost twenty minutes since he sat down.

Scout scrunched up his face. Ms. Kor can’t use the space port computers, so she can’t leave me a message, but if she’d gone to the restroom, how long would it take? Would she know where to go up here? She’d probably go to our rooms.

Decision made, he started back to the rooms. When he got there, she wasn’t in the main room. “Ms. Kor! Are you here? It’s me, Scout, looking for you.”

He slowly entered her room, but she wasn’t lying in bed. With some trepidation, he even checked her private restroom.
