(p.158) The double complementizer systems just described should not be confused with another form of split lexicalization for sentential introducers, found in so-called Balkan languages as well as in some Southern Italian and Sicilian varieties. The relevant systems are characterized either by the lack of morphological infinitives (for instance in Albanian; Manzini and Savoia 2007), or by the very reduced use of them. What in languages like English (or Italian, French, etc.) are embedded infinitival clauses associated with control and raising interpretations are rendered in Balkan(-like) languages by the embedding of finite clauses introduced by a specialized particle. In Calabrian varieties, including Arena in (13d), the relevant particle is mu. The independence of this phenomenon from the one we are concerned with here can be seen from the fact that they actually combine. Thus Arena, which has control and raising complements introduced by mu, also independently presents two complementizers of the k- series, roughly with the distribution described above for Montenerodomo, as in (12a)–(12b). Of the two complementizers, it is the ki one, selected notably by ‘before’ and ‘after’ that coincides with the wh-quantifier for ‘what,’ as in (13c).
