quiet of the wood, sometimes in her bedroom with the curtains drawn, never in public.

“What do you know? Who are you?”

“Relax.” He touched his fingers to hers. She could see the white from the tips, feel, even, the icy chill radiating from them.

He was just like her.

“Who are you?” she asked again.

He looked from side to side, then pulled her into the shadows of an alleyway. “Matthias.” Slowly, he pulled the toque off his head, revealing pointed ears. “And I’m also different.”

Zabina crossed her stone balcony and looked down at the Elven village that she could only just see—a blur of golden yellow in the dark. And she remembered him.

“Matthias.” His name made her shudder. What would he think of her now—he who believed she could use her powers for good, who thought she was good?

And she had been good when he was in her life. For a moment, she had even stopped being afraid of who she was—of her powers.

The light that illuminated from him—it kept the darkness at bay. But that light was now gone—murdered for being different, for being an elf.

A tear crept down her cheek. “Why did you choose to dwell amongst those who hated you? Why not stay with your kind?”

She could almost hear his answer. If I had stayed, I would never have found you.

Before, such an answer would’ve brought a smile to her face, but not now. If he had never seen her practising her powers in the woods, if her beauty hadn’t lured him into a land he didn’t belong, then he’d still be alive.

“Matthias.” Another tear. And then another.

The lights from the Elven land began to blur, even fade.

“Matthias.”
