CHAPTER 11

The cold, damp forest had no ending, and there would be no warm bed for her that night. It was only now that she realized what she’d gotten into by coming out west. There was no authority to turn to, nothing she could trust. There was nothing to keep the wolves at bay.

Nothing except a more deadly predator.

As Cassandra looked upwards, where the man had disappeared, she let herself entertain those forbidden fantasies in the light of day. When she glanced around at the girls, she realized it wasn’t a fantasy anymore, but a growing possibility. The thought sent chills down her spine and raised goosebumps down her arms.

Fantasy is one thing… But what kind of women would countenance such a life…

“Do you remember my first lesson on the Ottoman Empire?”

The girls turned quizzical frowns at her, but she pushed forward, ignoring the heat in her cheeks. “Their citizens benefit from the safest and most stable empires we’ve seen since Rome, but what lies a few hundred miles north?”

“The mountains that nearly broke Alexander,” Delicia answered, nodding as she already saw their teachers’ point.

“I don’t get it.” Josie frowned at her friend.

“The only law that rules there are the laws hard men make, and it’s the same here. We can’t forget that.” She went on in a softer voice, “And we can’t forget what happens to women there.”

“They join a harem if they find the right man,” Josie grinned and Cassandra made an ‘eep!’ of shock to hear her secret fantasy voiced aloud, even in jest.

Delicia gave her a frown of concern, but the older woman shifted on her rump, rubbing her hip to hide the outburst behind a twinge of pain. They didn’t mention it again, but as they debated possible plans, each would get a far off look in their eyes and Cassandra knew when the blush suffused their cheeks, and they couldn’t meet each other’s eyes, what had been on their thoughts.

It took longer than they thought for the man to return. When he dropped the last few feet, his shirt, hands, and britches were black with sap.

“I didn’t catch sight of them, but I’d bet anything they’re gaining on us.” he knelt, scrubbing his hands with dirt to remove the sap. The dust that rolled free clung to his torso, leaving him a dark mess. His eyes looked all the brighter to Cassandra when he peered up at them. “Do any of you know how to use a rifle?”

Josie vibrated with excitement as her hand shot into the air, followed by a more composed Delicia. The man raised his eyebrow at the raven-haired teen, but her expression never shifted and he gave a final nod and opened his mouth to lie out his plan, but before he could Pearl spoke up.

“If we’re to continue with you, sir. Then I would know what your motivations are in helping us.”

“Like I said before,” he rose, ignoring the girl’s frown as he brushed off his britches, “I didn’t have a choice.
