PARTY

After the opening-night performance, it is common for the producer or the producing company to throw a party. It’s usually labeled a cast party, but the people invited will include, in addition to the cast and crew, friends of the production and sometimes investors. The location of the party may vary, from someone’s home (it should be large enough that the cast and everyone else invited will not feel bashful about bringing guests with them) to a restaurant or hotel. I have attended Off-Broadway opening parties at some of the most exclusive restaurants in Manhattan, from Sardi’s to One Fifth Avenue. Unfortunately, the degree of the party’s elegance doesn’t always reflect what happened on the stage. Some of the nicest parties have followed some of the most disappointing productions, and vice versa. In all events, if the reviews are not good, the party will soon be over. The television reviews start being aired at around 11 p.m., and there may be three or fewer. The New York Times is out at about 12:30 a.m., but usually the press agent gets the review at around midnight from someone at the Times.
