Sustain Focus
Although I will address the issue of sustainability more fully in chapter 7, the issue of sustaining focus deserves special attention. Focusâfor leaders, education systems, schools, and classroomsâis the essence of closing the gap between what we know and what we do. Mike Schmoker (2011) reduces the essentials of focus to four areas: (1) curriculum, (2) lessons, (3) meaningful reading and writing, and (4) implementation, including monitoring of implementation. Specifically, he claims:
We know what a sound, coherent curriculum is. Letâs build one in every course we teach, with common assessments, and then actually monitor to ensure that itâs being taught.
We knowânow more than everâthat structurally sound lessons will literally multiply the number of students who will be ready for college, careers, and citizenship.
We know that students desperately need to do lots of meaningful reading and writing . . . and that this does not necessitate inordinate amounts of paper grading. Letâs stop making excuses for not doing it.
We know that the implementation of all of the above relies on our commitment to monitor that implementation and encourage teachers to work in teams to help each other to refine and improve on their design and execution. If they do, each of the above will improve dramatically and inexorably. Itâs that simple. (p. 217)
