“Hey, buddy.”

Recker blinked, swearing he heard Spencer’s soft voice in the dark room. He turned over, looking for his mate, but the bed was empty. Recker reached over and clicked on the small overhead lamp, having to blink a few times as the room filled with light.

When everything came into focus, Recker saw Spencer standing by the bed, Bear over by the door. “What’s going on?” Recker asked as he tossed the covers aside and grabbed his jeans from the floor, pulling them over his legs and waist. “Where’s Frisco?”

He didn’t like the look in Spencer’s light-brown eyes. His best friend refused to look at him, strangling his fingers as he licked his lips. “He’s gone, Recker. He called me and asked me to come get you.”

Spencer’s words weren’t registering. Recker’s eyes swept the room but he didn’t see Frisco anywhere. He cocked his head at Spencer and then walked to the bathroom.

It was empty.

Recker’s world spun out of control and he was finding it hard to breathe, to think, even to see. “Frisco!”

Spencer moved closer. “He’s gone, Recker.”

Not even his best friend’s tear-filled voice was registering. Recker pushed past Bear and swung the motel door open, desperate to find his mate. He stepped out into the early morning light and knew his world was coming to a screeching halt. He began to hyperventilate, his heart racing out of control when not only did he see that Frisco’s bike was gone, but the Santiago brothers were waiting outside.

This couldn’t be happening. He hadn’t lost Frisco, no, no way. His body halted in pure shock and anger. Frisco had left him, had abandoned him.

Recker turned and slammed his fists into the yellow cinderblocks, becoming light-headed as he struggled to breathe. Where was his mate? Why would he leave Recker behind?

Recker was angry with himself, with Frisco, with how things had been growing between them. He hadn’t known how to fix things, so they kept getting worse and worse. Recker had thought that winning all those fights would make Frisco happy, but the man continued to harp that Recker needed to go home.

Frisco might not have said those exact words, but that was how Recker had taken them. Frisco had been trying to get rid of him for months.

He wanted to hurt something, the world, the way his heart was hurting right now. Recker wasn’t even sure how he was still standing because the pain was so damn unbearable.

It felt as if Recker was going black, his emotions spiraling out of control and taking him to a place he had been when his twin had died. It was a place of total darkness and void of any love or happiness. It was a place of pain and suffering and brutal violence.

“Recker?” Spencer walked out of the motel room, his arms wrapped around his stomach and his mate standing right behind him. “Talk to me, buddy.”

From the corner of his eye, Recker saw the Santiago brothers slip from their bikes and move in a little closer.
