God's Merciful Timing

God's ways are not our ways (Isa. 55:8-9). As the psalmist wisely asked the Almighty to “teach me Your way, O LORD” (PS. 27:11), so it behooves God's people to learn and recognize the ways of their Lord. Why does God choose, in His sovereignty, suddenly to draw large numbers of people to Himself over a brief time period? Why is there a sense of urgency in times of revival and spiritual awakening? There are many reasons. For one thing God knows the future.

Pentecost

During the time of Pentecost in Jerusalem, thousands of people accepted the gospel message preached by Peter and the early church. The Christian movement was birthed and set in motion around the known world. But what did God know that the citizens of Jerusalem did not? Four decades later Roman legions would surround the city and level it, killing thousands of people. Judgment was coming on the city. Some of those saved at Pentecost might one day lose their lives at the end of a Roman sword. The people of Jerusalem did not have an indefinite period of time to turn to Christ. It was critical that the Holy Spirit produce a great ingathering at Pentecost.
