At twelve-fifteen, Frank Haines, in blue jeans and short black boots, stamped into the room and gazed upon Gary Mason, seated, legs crossed, placidly sipping a highball.

“What the hell?” said Frank Haines. “What’s the program for this afternoon—getting drunk or going riding?”

“Riding,” said Mason. “I was early.”

“Maggie saddled?”

“Not yet.”

“So? What the dickens were you waiting for?”

“You.” Mason stood up. “Where’s your horse?”

“Tethered outside.”

“Fine. I’ll go and saddle Maggie now. Relax, why don’t you? Sit down. Have yourself a drink. Man, you really sound all tensed up.”

“Man, I really am.” Haines grinned glumly. “Been working too hard and accomplishing too little. Forgive me my frailties, my friend. I promise to behave better. Yes, I think I will have that drink. Now you go saddle your beloved mare.”

Gary Mason, slim in riding togs, quit the trophy room. Once more he made certain to close the door, this time leaving Frank Haines alone within.

Ten minutes later, astride their horses, they waved to Harry Garrick.

“Should anybody inquire,” called Frank Haines, “for the next hour I’m on the trails riding a horse, and after that I’m at my shack working like a horse. Good-bye, Harry.”

“Good-bye, sir.”

“Let’s go, my friend.”

The horses wheeled and clattered off.
