Chapter 9

W hen the Frendly Islander arrived at the jetty the children were very excitable and hungry, but there was no sign of dinner. Vayne and Vulga loped off towards Meconium House without saying a word.

Chapter 10

L eo rubbed his eyes and yawned. It had been a long, hard, weary night. He’d drifted in and out of sleep. He did remember a happy dream about him and his dad watching the latest Burp Lancaster movie, and taking Peace and Quiet to the park in Gumsberry.

But there were other dreams too, far scarier ones, where his butt was permanently glued to a tree and he was left all alone on the island with no food or water. All he could do was watch his friends wave from the windows of the Kaput 3000, flying home to their mums and dads while Leo was left behind, glued to a tree like a prisoner on a pirate ship.

As he peered down from a branch, he watched in horror as poisonous snakes crept up his legs and a poison dart frog crawled into his mouth.

As he wiped sleep from his eyes, he reached for his Dubbly Bubbly, pulling his bedsheets right up to his chin. More unpleasant thoughts clouded his mind. Had his mum and dad known about Friendly Island? Surely they knew it wasn’t anything like Disneyland?

Or was he being punished for gobbling bubblegum? But wait, he thought, my parents might be a tiny bit crazy, but they’re not mean. They do love me.

Don’t they?

At breakfast, almost everyone crowded around Felix. Everyone, that was, apart from Ricky, who chose to sit by himself at the end of the table. There was constant chatter about sharks, whales and near-death incidents.

‘We have more surprises in store today!’ said Vayne. ‘Help yourself to our breakfast feast and then we’ll meet the friendliest animals on the island. If you’re lucky, you might even meet Daisy, the WORLD’S LARGEST LIZARD!’ Then Vayne laughed, but it wasn’t a comforting or cheery laugh, it was a cackle that vibrated and rumbled with a force so great it could have woken a sleeping tiger.

‘I don’t like that man,’ said Eden. ‘He’s...how does Ricky say it?’

‘Stubborn up the backside?’ Leo replied.

‘No, the other one?’

‘A drongo butt?’

‘Yeah, drongo butt, that’s it,’ said Eden.

Despite his excruciating hunger, Leo pushed his plate away. It knocked into a pair of old binoculars. ‘Eden?’ he asked, picking them up. ‘Where did you get these?’

‘I found them...on the boat.’ She grinned. ‘You can borrow them if you want.’

‘Yes, please!’ said Leo. ‘Thanks.’

‘I demand a refund!’ Harriet yelled, slamming her tablespoon into her green gloop. ‘I am not used to such inadequate guff! I grew up with a personal chef, who taught me how to make a Crema Catalana when I was five. That’s a Spanish dessert, in case you didn’t know! What am I doing here?’

Then Harriet did the most outrageous thing. She stood up and pushed her plate away, hard. Leo watched it slide across the table, before finally landing on the floor with an almighty smash.
