Chapter Eleven

I didn’t actually share any classes with the Filthy Four, so once the bell rang, we were off in different directions. I dragged Cole along with me and told my teachers that Cole was my cousin from out of town who was here for a visit. They thankfully let him sit in on all my classes without asking me any questions about my story of Cole’s identity.

I found it hard to look at Cole.

Me creating him was supposed to be my salvation from the Filthy Four. But it had no effect.

If anything, it got him in their good books.

Cole still wanted to hold my hand in the hallway between classes, so his acceptance by the Filthy Four hadn’t gone to his head yet. Demon bless it, I was so pissed.

The worst part was that Cole didn’t seem to have any concept of how that all went wrong. He was still happy and smiling, even now in the last class of the day, seemingly oblivious to how that had gone pear-shaped and how I was still the loser in everything.

By lunchtime, it was clear word had started to spread about who and what Cole was. I dragged Cole along with me to the lunch table I shared with Igor and the other humans. It was in the far corner where the light was perpetually burned out. The Filthy Four had a table at the other end of the cafeteria, the only table in front of the only window in this space. The rest of the cafeteria really had no hierarchical rules; people sat where they wanted to sit. It was just the highest of the high and the lowest of the low that had designated tables.

As we walked across the cafeteria, all eyes were on us. Or, more specifically, all eyes were on Cole. He gave a little wave to the people staring at him, a wave I would have found cute if I wasn’t on the verge of being steaming mad with him.

I did my best to ignore it all.

When we got to the table, Igor was already there. We shared first period, but then we were separated for the rest of the morning. He looked up at us as we came up to him, and then he looked at all the people staring at Cole.

I sat down in the chair opposite Igor so all I could see in front of me was Igor and the wall behind him. There was no way I was going to sit beside him and look out at the hundreds of students staring at Cole. Cole sat beside me, still holding my hand. I had to almost shake his hand off mine so I could open my lunch bag. Cole had whipped up some concoction that smelled incredible, but right now I had little appetite.

“How was the morning?” Igor asked.

“So fun!” Cole said, sounding way too happy and bubbly.

I looked at Cole and tried to silence him with a glare, but it seemed to have no effect.
