The Angel

Nottingham, 30 November 1811

Dear Captain Ludd,

I pray that you will come to the aid of a young woman who at this present time is in a state of great distress. My brother is, as I write, in gaol. He was one of a group of frame breakers who most unluckily raided the workshop of Mr Betts. I say unluckily as they were attacked and apprehended by the militia when they tried to flee.

During the frame breaking one of the Luddites fired a shot at Mr Betts, the factory owner. He was killed. My brother was identified as the killer. I know he is innocent, as he has never fired a pistol in his life and would not know how to do so. Neither is he a murderer.
