“5…4…3…2…1…1…2…3…4…5”, I count out loud, clutching my chest with one hand, bracing myself against the wall with the other. The yellowed walls and dingy carpet spin as my vision blurs.

“No one is here Echo. No one. It’s safe,” I remind myself, as if saying the words out loud makes it more real.

Breathing in and out in slow, steady measures, I brace myself for a few more minutes before I continue walking. I open the door to my old bedroom and it’s exactly as I left it. A fucking tomb. A shrine to the past. No one has touched it since the day I walked out. My disc-man is on the floor, headphones still connected. My worn and weathered copy of Violet and Claire is still laying in the center of my bed. A thick layer of dust covers everything.
