Meyers went to his room and changed. He so wanted his mother to be incorrect, but he just couldnât find a flaw in her logic. He found a cool, light gray tunic that would help keep away the heat of the day. There was no reason to guess where his target might be, he knew right where to find her. She would be reading in the garden, on a private bench near the waterfalls, as the younger children would leave her alone there. They found it too hot to be outside during the day, and the gardens were a place of danger when their older brother Hayline might be lurking about. His temper was well known around the Citadel and the city.
Meyers found his half-sister right where he thought she would be, dressed in black robes, sitting on a bench. Not wanting anything to do with her, on a personal level it might be hard to convince her the best option was for them to get married. Better to not lead with that option. First, he would need to pretend he liked her, maybe even loved her. That might be a task if there ever was one.
He needed to build up enough courage to get past the first step. Now was when he wished there were liquor stashed about his person. Perhaps it was time to buy a flask and start drinking⦠heavily.
With a step, he took the plunge, out from behind the columnâand quickly right back behind it. He hated himself for being such a coward with Hope.
âYou understand I can hear you standing there, just come out from behind the column. It is kind of creepy if you hide like that.â
âShit,â Meyers whispered under his breath. Then continued loud enough for her to hear him clearly, âI didnât want to disturb you if you were busy, but since you are only reading.â
He heard her growl as she answered, âOh no, I was, after all, only reading one of the greatest historians of all time, not like it was that important.â
âGlad we can agree on something then.â Meyers cluelessly walked to the bench Hope sat on and plopped beside her. âWhat does he say?â
Hope inspected his face. Her eyes appeared tiny under the reading glasses she wore, her hair nearly straightâmaybe they didnât share the same father after all. She didnât sport his naturally frizzy black hair. Her hair was the color of a ratâs hair. It reminded him of the black rat he fed a harpy the night before. She took her glasses off, and her eyes became even smaller. He never noticed before, but her whole face resembled a rat. All she needed was whiskers, if he painted a few on her while she slept⦠Oh shit, she has been talking this whole time.
ââ¦and that is why I believe our history has been scrubbed to make our familyâs name seem better than it really should be.â She finished her lecture on the book she had been studying.
He had no idea what to say, his contemplation of her rat face took his total concentration.
