Junior Class Trip

A few hours after I sneak back to my hotel room, I wake up at six o’clock to get ready for my big day in New York.

I decide to wear my comfortable black tunic dress and white sneakers. Our room is so tiny, I keep crashing into the end of my twin bed as I’m ambling around sleepily. The hotel’s dark maroon wallpaper makes it feel like it’s still the middle of the night.

After I finish doing my makeup, I check my purse to make sure I have Mom’s credit card, money, and phone.

Grace is simultaneously watching an online makeup tutorial on her phone and carefully applying green eyeliner. She looks stunning, as always.

I yawn. “Ready to go?”

“I need a few more minutes.” She points at her mouth. “I need to do my lippy.”

“I told Nick I’d meet him for breakfast, since we won’t get to see each other all day.”

She flashes me a knowing grin. “See you downstairs.”

I leave our hotel room and ride the elevator down to the lobby.

Finally, a school field trip that truly excites me. I’ve always wanted to visit New York. I’ve never been here before, but I think about this city every day because this is where nearly all of the literary agents and publishers work.

If I don’t find a literary agent who can sell my book to a publisher, Here Comes the Sun will never be published. I’ve sent twelve query letters to agents, asking them to read my graphic novel and to consider representing me. No bites yet. I’m hoping being in New York will give me some good publishing karma.

I meet Nick at the hotel Starbucks. He stands, rising up to his full six feet, handing me a cup. “Good morning. It’s green tea. Careful, it’s hot.”

“Good morning,” I reply, giving him a quick kiss before taking a sip of my much-needed caffeine.

I like that he remembers my Starbucks order. Also, he’s ruggedly handsome and tan with cropped brown hair. He plays on the basketball team with Caleb, who set us up a couple of months ago. He looks and dresses as if he’s in one of those The Fast and the Furious movies I secretly adore (white T-shirts, jeans, boots), but he’s a dork at heart. And boy do I like watching him run up and down the basketball court. Just like Max, a basketball player hypnotized me and now I’m suddenly a fan.

The chaperones told us to meet by Starbucks at seven o’clock in the morning to catch the train into Manhattan. They want to pack as much sightseeing into one day as humanly possible.

“I wish they’d turn us loose,” I say to Nick. “I mean, we’re seventeen. Don’t they trust us to walk around?”

“No,” Nick says with a grin. “I have all sorts of ideas how to spend this trip, and none of them are teacher-approved.”

“Oh yeah? Like what?”

He leans closer, nuzzling his face against my hair. “Most of my ideas involve us staying here in your room.
