The Effingham Arms public house. The stone cottages in which Doris Wood and Ivy Broomhead once lived stood to the right of the pub. The Author
Amy, Frances, Doris Wood and Ivy Broomhead then left the Stainrodâs at around 9 pm and set out on the short walk to the Toll Bar House. It would take them no more than ten minutes to reach the only lighted area they would meet before they arrived back at Abdy Farm. Once there they crossed the road and made for the gate that would lead them onto the footpath home. As they reached the stile beside this gate, a man, clearly drunk, emerged from the shadows. Annoyed at having to move he became abusive and swore at them. Amy and Frances, clearly scared of the man, quickly climbed the stile and ran off into the darkness. Doris Wood and Ivy Broomhead then went off along Upper Wortley Road to their homes near the Effingham Arms pub opposite Droppingwell Road.
Back at Abdy Farm Sarah Collinson had started to become concerned at around 8.30 pm that night. This had been the pre-arranged time by which they were to have been back at the farm. The two Nicholson boys had been at the farm waiting for their sister since 7 pm. So trimming a lantern, she sent William, the elder of the two, along with her son Arthur out along the footpath to find the girls and bring them home. They were back forty-five minutes later empty handed. After some discussion with her husband, it was decided to send both of the Nicholson boys back out, but this time once they reached the Toll Bar House they were to set out for Droppingwell and the row of stone cottages where Ivy Broomhead lived. From there they could send Amy home and continue on to Scholes with Frances. Nothing more was heard until half past ten that night when Isaac Nicholson turned up at the farm to say his sons had arrived back and had not found the girls.
Arthur Collinson, trimmed another lantern and the two men set out for Binderâs Farm to check whether or not Henry Binderâs children had seen Amy or Frances at the church hall. Drawing a blank they left the farm after a few fruitless minutes and were met by PC Thorpe as they walked back out onto Kimberworth Park Road. After listening to their concerns he agreed to join their search and the three set out for Kimberworth. By 3 am the search area had been widened and the searching group joined by concerned neighbours and an ever increasing number of policemen. At some point around four oâclock in the morning, having found no trace of either girl it was decided to call off the search until daylight. They resumed at a little after 7 am.
Dora Nicholson arrived at Abdy Farm that morning just after this second search had begun. She wanted Sarah to join her and meet up with Isaac in Kimberworth.
