Chapter 22

Liam was sure he was going to be sick. Some time ago, he had stumbled out of bed and locked himself in the bathroom. He stared at his reflection in the mirror.

How had it come to this? At what point had he made the decision that he was going to walk away from all the values he’d been taught and had stood for. As he drew the back of his hand across his mouth his ring finger caught his eye. That was the point of no return – the moment he had taken off his wedding ring and flung it in the snow in anger. He had dashed away his ring in an emotional outrage the same way he had dashed away his wedding vows the night before.

The night played out before him, and he retched.

Heidi had been there for him these last few days, caring for him, meeting his every need. He had been so grateful he had begun to see her in a new light. He had never even known Heidi had such nurturing qualities. She’d always struck him as cool and detached. But all that had changed.

She was like an angel come to minister to him. For the next few days, she had made him soothing lemon teas and other herbal concoctions, cooked him nutritious vegan meals, fed him, and played board games with him when he got cabin fever.

He had even confided in her what had caused Nia to leave and that she had left to go with Damon Deverre. She had shared his outrage and suggested that it called for something stronger than tea. She had brought him some coffee and then poured some whiskey into their cups.

“Irish coffee,” she’d said with a wink.

They had drunk two more cups, and before he knew it, Heidi was curled up against him with his arm around her shoulder. It was a short step from there for her to turn her face to his in expectation and for him to meet his lips with hers. Suddenly, it felt good to just feel pleasure again. Even though it would be easy to claim he’d been drunk, he knew that a part of him made the conscious decision to seek pleasure first and deal with the consequences later.

And now he was dealing with the consequences, and the consequences were dire.

Liam slid down beside the bathtub, holding his head in his hand. It wasn’t just the hangover that made him feel as though his head had been split in two. He wished with all his heart that was all. No, it was the guilt, the guilt that was eating him alive from the inside. How could he face Heidi after he had used her body for his temporary pleasure? What about Nia? How could there ever be a chance for reconciliation between them after this? How about his parents’ disappointment if they ever found out, or his friends, his church? His image as this virtuous role model would be shot if this became known.
