To Alexâs relief, Dixon didnât make a comment. Maybe he would start by trying it out on his friend. Dixon looked like heâd eat just about anything.
âSurely you didnât go to such trouble for a pastoral visit,â Alex said.
âI love to do this sort of thing,â Nancy said. âThis is why Iâm glad to see you, Dixon. As usual, I prepared too much food. My husband Ben complains about gaining weight. He told me to find someone else to feed.â She frowned. âCan I help it that I love to cook?â
âGlad to be of service,â Dixon said cheerfully. âCall me any time you have leftovers. My bachelor meals leave something to be desired.â
âGood to know. Now help yourselves.â Nancy fluttered around them like a perfect tearoom hostess.
After one bite into the scone, Alex closed his eyes blissfully. âJust like my mother used to make.â
âThe highest compliment.â Nancy smiled broadly.
âUnless your mother was a cook like my aunt Alice,â Dixon offered. âThe woman could ruin Jell-O. Donât even get me started on the chicken she cooked. There should have been a law against it. After dinner at her house we played twenty questions to figure out what kind of meat sheâd served. Sometimes weâd throw it back and forth like a Frisbee until the dog got it.â He tucked into the scones.
âIâm curious to know what this visit is about, Nancy,â Alex said. âThe last time I saw you both, you and Ben were bemoaning the cost of insulating this house for winter. And nowâ¦â
Nancy flushed and looked a little embarrassed. âI finally did what youâve been telling me to do all along, Pastor Alex. I got down on my knees and prayed. Funny, isnât it, how what should be so obviousâlike prayerâis always a last resort when it should be the first. It finally sank in that the only way to know what to do with the house was to ask God to guide us. Iâd been asking, of course, but, I have to admit, not really listening for an answer. About three days ago I woke up with my answer.â
âGod does speak through dreams sometimes. Joseph, for exampleâ¦â
âI woke up from a dream in which I was serving tea just like I am todayâonly to a group of strangers.â Nancy smiled at Alex and Dixonâs confused expressions. âNot just any strangersâguests at my bed-and-breakfast. Hubbard House B&B. The idea has come up before, but never so clearly as this. I saw the entire thing in my dream.â She clasped her hands together and put them to her lips, looking excited.
âYouâd turn Hubbard House into a B&B?â
âIf we had income from the house, it would be easier to justify fixing it up and living in it. Weâve already closed off the third-floor ballroom and the two draftiest bedrooms on the north side of the house. I can use my homemade quilts to warm the rooms. Yesterday I designed quilted window dressings. Cozy and prettyâand when you pull the quilted curtains closed, no draft would dare try to get in.
