Canonicus, sachem—or lead chief—of the Narragansett, had become familiar with the English since they had first settled in Plymouth. He was not fond of them but had become friendly with Roger Williams. When he learned of Gorton’s connection to Williams, he agreed to allow the three Englishmen to stay in the village until the storm subsided.

Gorton took advantage of the opportunity to befriend Canonicus and learn a little of their language and customs. During their three days in the Narragansett village, the two men struck up a friendship. Canonicus spoke reasonable English, but more importantly, he was a good and patient teacher of his native Algonquin language. Because of the adverse weather, the two men spent most of three days in Canonicus’s home, talking while Samuel took notes on language and culture.

Canonicus was a wealth of information on tribal history and legends. He spoke with great pride of how the Narragansett traded and lived peacefully in the Narragansett Bay area. He also spoke of the long-standing friction between the Narragansett and the Mohegan.

Even in the midst of weather the likes of which he had never seen before, cast out of Plymouth and forced to seek a new home in the dead of winter, the days Samuel spent in Canonicus’s village proved a blessing, as two men from very different cultures struck up the beginnings of a strong friendship.
