Megan had heard the sound of the car engine first. She prodded Siobhan and both listened to it drive past to the left of their location. To their horror, they heard it stop within a few minutes, the sound of the door opening and closing confirming that they were closer to the cottage that they’d thought. He would find them if they didn’t do something quickly.

They were cold and tired and stiff all over. At least there was a bit of light that showed the forest in all its majesty, the rows of trees stretching hundreds of yards away until they were swallowed up in the distant gloom. That’s where they needed to head to.

The going was tough on them. The forest floor was uneven, littered by debris from the trees and pitted with indents caused by burrowing animals. There were clumps of bushes, most with prickly points, and clusters of nettles that grabbed at their already swollen ankles, adding another layer of pain that made it impossible to make much progress. But they stumbled stoically onwards, cutting a zig-zag path that made them reach out gratefully for the comfort of each tree they passed.

Fear drove them forward, despite the noise they were making and the dread of being discovered. The farther they made it into the comfort of the forest, the better their chances of getting away. At least that’s what they tried to convince each other about.

Until they heard the sounds of footsteps and saw the sweep of a torchlight bounce of a tall tree immediately ahead of them.
