âWhatâs bothering you?â Ren asked when we were in the room together that night.
I looked at him. Where could I start? I had a million things on my mind. Front and center was the fact that weâd killed Carlin. Everyone kept saying it was self-defense; sheâd made the first move. It couldnât be misconstrued as an act of war, but that didnât change the fact that she was dead.
At the hand of my magic. Mostly.
Nylah had been involved, too. But I didnât feel like she was the one to blame for all of this.
âTalk to me,â Ren begged. I sat cross-legged on the bed, and he joined me. The mattress dipped under his weight. He lifted his hand and brushed his fingers down my cheek. When his power shuddered through me, I closed my eyes and drank him in.
âItâs a lot to deal with,â I said.
âI know. I wish I could make this easier on you.â
I shook my head. âCleaning up my mess shouldnât be your responsibility.â
âYou know thatâs not true, right?â Ren asked with a frown.
I shook my head. âI caused a war! Carlinâs death is only going to make everything worse. If I werenât hereâ¦â I let out a shuddering breath.
Ren pulled me tightly against him, and I let him hold me. Tension bled out of me, as if he were shouldering the stress for me.
âListen to me,â Ren said, and his deep voice rumbled through his chest against my ear. âI know things are rough now, and itâs going to get worse before it gets better. Iâm not giving up on you, though, and Iâm not giving up on us. Do you hear me?â
âCarlin would have called for a ceasefire if you had given me up,â I said. I wanted to add that it would be better that way. Everyone was so set on having me around, but couldnât they see it was only going to push them deeper and deeper into trouble?
âWe wonât give you up. I wonât give you up. Iâm going to fight for you. Your mine, and I wonât cower to anyoneâs threats.â
I pulled away from him and looked into his eyes. They were the color of ice, determined, hard. His jaw was set, and he was serious about what he was saying. With his dark hair framing his face, Ren was a sight to behold. He was powerful, the magic he wielded rolling off him in waves even when he didnât display his power.
âI donât understand,â I said. âThis is so much bigger than you and me. Itâs the entire kingdom weâre talking about! A civil war!â
âI know,â Ren said. âBut I fight for what I believe in. And I believe weâre meant to be together. The bond doesnât lie about who my mate is, Ellie. And as long as we have this bond, I donât care what anyone says about our relationship. Youâre my mate, and weâre going to face this together.â
I looked into his eyes. They changed from icy cold, the color of a glacier, to an oceanic blue.
