Now this is not to say that you can’t get the software for experimenting and learning. You can download a production level version of Server 2012r2 for free and use it for 180 days without ‘licensing’. The problem is, even their entry level version Server 2012 Essentials, which is meant for small businesses is expensive. As of this writing the list price is $400, which can be a bit much for the home hobbyist to justify. If you’re building a business then that amount, though still high, is about the cost of doing business. You don’t want your systems sitting on some network in an executive suite wide open to the rest of the world.

Linux – Linux has come of age in the last few years. There are a nearly mindboggling array of versions to choose from when building a home system. What began as a specialist’s alternative to Microsoft has developed over time into a potential replacement for Microsoft. I’m not sure where I come down on the ‘replacement’ bandwagon, but I can say with 100% authority that it is a true alternative in both the server and desktop varieties. The operating systems are robust, relatively secure and boast a massive community of developers and enthusiasts that you can ask questions of if/when you encounter problems.
