Chapter 26

Danny sat and stared at the screens in front of her. She was uneasy that Bill and Greg had leapt to the conclusion that Dave Henderson was somehow involved in the poaching syndicate. This was a damaging allegation against one of their own. She liked Dave. When she had arrived in Lesedi, he had been friendly and enthusiastic about her work, even though it was clear he didn’t understand half of what she said. His stubborn attempts to increase his lodge’s guest accommodation and then negotiate with the Board over putting up the money for the de Villiers’ land installed him as a local pain in the ass. It didn’t make him a criminal. Something didn’t feel right.

A lot didn’t feel right. She cringed at the memory of her reaction to Carmen badgering her the night before. She had already been brought low, buoyed into consciousness only by frustration and anger at her impotence to save Mama. She had let Carmen get close, closer than anyone in a very long time. She could still sense the comfort of her arms around her, the gentle touch of her as she kissed her, a release that loosened her from her burdens, silenced her mind into a trance and sent a pulsing energy through her body. She yearned to have that intimacy again, but it was daunting, reminding her of the gulf that stretched between them.

Danny closed her eyes as she fought against these conflicting emotions. She had everything she ever wanted here, except what she had experienced that night. But Carmen would be gone in days. It couldn’t lead to what she yearned for. Everything seemed to crowd in on her all at once, and she couldn’t face the barrage. Some of it had to end. There was simply no space for it all.

She shuddered, a physical reaction to shake off her malaise. There was so much that needed to be done. She worried over the accuracy of what she and Greg had done that morning. They had worked hard and fast, and although she had concentrated her mind as best she could and had been careful, there could be mistakes that could mislead them. Despite her flagging energy, she had to be sure. There was too much at stake.

She sat forward, pulled the keyboard towards her and began at the beginning, checking each step along the way and the outcome it produced. It only confirmed her previous results, but the concentrated occupation of her mind eased her tension and held unsettling thoughts at bay. She was still busy when Bill strode into her office.

“Are you up for a little drive?” he asked, a mischievous smile playing on his lips.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “What for?” she asked.

He pulled a chair over and sat down hard. “I think we need to visit Dave Henderson. I haven’t seen him for quite a while, and I think it would be neighbourly to visit him, don’t you think?”

Danny screwed up her face in distaste.
