Oñati

The town of Oñati is one of the most attractive in the region and has a proud history as a university town and, until the mid-19th century, as a semi-independent fief of the local lord. The university, Universidad de Sancti Spiritus, was established in 1540 and is a beautiful example of cultured Renaissance architecture with an attractive colonnaded quadrangle. The stately red-balconied Casa Consistorial overlooks the main square where the two principal pedestrian streets, Calle Zaharra and Calle Barria, meet. These streets are the centre of the lively weekend nightlife as well as being the town’s major axes.
