Enablers of Flow Adoption

Let’s now focus a bit on a few key high-level qualities of flow, and how they support these business drivers. We won’t yet try to speculate too much about the specific technical features that flow might exhibit (the remaining chapters of this book will do that in more detail). Instead, we’ll look at flow as a senior executive might, and explore the qualities fluent architectures must display to make the technology compelling in the context of the change drivers we just discussed.

The three traits of flow that I think will have the most impact on its adoption lie in lowering the cost of stream processing, increasing the flexibility in composing data flows, and creating and utilizing a rich market ecosystem. Lower cost, increased flexibility, and increased choice are three natural attractors for any organization looking to “do more with less” while remaining adaptable to changing conditions. These same enablers also attract any organization with a need to explore and utilize timely processing of external data streams. So let’s explore each in more depth.
