CHAPTER ELEVEN

SON OR SERVANT?

The subjects of law and grace are approached from a number of different aspects in the Book of Galatians. For example, in the first part of chapter 4 these truths are illustrated by comparing the relationship of a servant with that of the heir-apparent. For the first few years in the heir's life, as long as he is in his minority, he is under tutors and governors and is as much under the direction of others as is a slave in the household. But there comes a day when the son reaches maturity and he is given the place of a full-grown son in the home.

In our cultures this might compare to the time when a son or a daughter is married and leaves the father's house to establish another home. As long as a child in the home puts his feet under the family table, he is under the rules and regulations of the home, but with maturity comes a new relationship. This is the lesson that is carried over into the spiritual realm to illustrate our changed relationship to the Law through Christ.

Paul says, "Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ" (Gal. 4:1-7).
