The ping pong room in the basement of Patrick’s residence had been painted by a pair of Chinese students who lived in Bowater House a few years before Patrick arrived and was known to everyone as “The Golden Rooster.” The walls were gold and dark scarlet, with illustrations of dragons and fighting cocks. The two Chinese students had been the university’s undisputed table tennis champions, and they were popular with the other house members because of it. They were brought to parties and sports events, like mascots.

Patrick often wondered how they ended up in Newfoundland and what had become of them. No one seemed to remember what their real names were. Most people had referred to them as Ping and Pong, often speaking of them as a unit. Where’s Ping Pong? Has anyone seen Ping Pong?
