Abduction

Nichole Haines

Night settled down slowly over the peaceful town. The dark sky filled up with small, radiant little stars that made people gasp in awe and take barely adequate photographs with their cheap phone cameras. The summer warmth turned into a light chilly breeze as the parties around the blocks started to dissipate and children were called inside by their worried parents, anxious to finally put them to bed.

Robert hadn’t even been outside that day, having been absorbed by fantasy books, so their parents didn’t have to go through all that ordeal, happy that their child was so peaceful and didn’t cause any problems. When evening turned into night, they had a hard time parting with their story, as it kept getting increasingly more captivating and it was difficult to go to sleep while constantly wondering what would happen next to the heroes.

However, Mother had insisted on turning their lights off and put aside a glass of warm milk at their leisure, in order to fall asleep easier. Yet Robert lay there in bed, tossing and turning, mind full of excitement and wonder regarding his most recent novel, yearning to get out of bed and read all night until they’d find out the ending.

They eventually quietly sneaked out to find the flashlight their parents had forgotten about and, careful to not make any noise, got back into bed, covered by the light blanket, eyes devouring the final chapters.

Right when the plot was the most intriguing, a piercing, mechanical noise jerked Robert from the reading adventure and sent an electrifying shiver down the back of their neck. They knew that it was probably nothing, but being the anxious kid that they were, it was hard to not get freaked out, especially when the sound kept going on, raking at his ears quite painfully.

After shivering under the covers, anxiously waiting for the sound to go away, trying to convince themselves that it was nothing more than a parked car or some rebel kids on the streets, even though it sounded nothing like either of those, Robert finally gathered up the courage to get up. Feet trembling terribly, they made their way over to the windowsill, cover draped over their head, book hastily forgotten and dropped onto the wooden floor.

What they saw made their heart instantly freeze and no matter how scared they were, somehow they couldn’t turn around anymore, since their feet were now glued to the ground. A gigantic oval-shaped space ship that seemed made out of scrappy metal was hovering above the front lawn, with tons of small lights going on and off continuously, a huge headlight blazing blinding light straight in their direction.

Before they could even wonder why the hell they were the only person on the entire street to hear the screeching metal noise made, as it was not subtle in any way, the flashing light suddenly surrounded them and they had to put their hands up in order to shield their eyes from the blinding light that was now behind shown directly at them.
