Nonprofit organization growth, for most organizations, does develop in a patterned way. Stages of more mature development follow those of less mature development in a remarkably predictable manner. To a large (but general) extent, we can forecast organizational behaviors based on what we observe of the organization in the present.

“Now I know we’re normal” is what many nonprofit employees and board members say when they read the descriptions of different stages.

Life cycle norms are only averages. Your nonprofit organization may be ahead of or behind these averages. So, if a certain behavior is characteristic of a Stage Four organization, and your ten-year-old-organization has not reached this stage yet, you should not feel that you have cause to worry. Your nonprofit organization may be a little slower than the average. Likewise, if your two-year-old organization excels in a particular arena, you may still be primarily in an early stage of development. Every nonprofit organization has its own timetable.
