5.11 Exercises
The aim of these exercises is to help you become more confident with sketching and to run through basic skills. There are many books and courses available. If you wish to explore particular styles or improve your skills further, we suggest that you seek out these courses. When basic skills have been mastered, it is often one of confidence, practice and critical evaluation. By practising and reflecting on your work you can improve. But remember, these are sketches with a purpose. And that purpose is to record, explore and explain. You are not aiming for drawings that would become works of art. So the pressure is off, just go and sketch!
Ex. 5.1— Sketching a straight line
In the first exercise we start by drawing a straight line. This may sound simple, but lines are the basic sketched shapes that you will need to perform. When you draw a line, look to where you want the line to end and draw the line to that position. 1.First draw a dot on the page on the right hand side of the page. Now use this as your target. Start the pen about 3 cm to the left of the dot, and aim your line at the dot. Try to do it fast, but also accurately. If you are too slow when, you draw the line, then it will look wobbly. Also make sure you end at the dot. Do this several times, to practice ending at a specific point. For this line use a reasonably thick pen, about 0.8 mm nib will work well.
