18.

Dad hauls out leftover lasagna from the freezer for lunch and nukes it until it’s bubbling. We sit on opposite sides of the table, forks jabbing at the cheesy meaty mess on our plates.

‘Any plans?’ he asks as I’m scraping the last bits off my plate with the edge of my fork. We’re not big on manners when it’s just the two of us.

‘B-B-Brandon’s tonight,’ I tell him.

‘Shannon going?’

I shake my head.

He wipes his plate with a slice of bread, takes a bite and chews it slowly. ‘Are you two like –’ he begins and my face burns and I shake my head to shut him up. Rattle my fork onto the plate and head for the sink.

I’ve gotta buy Brandon a present. I don’t want to hit Dad up coz he’s just spent a hundred bucks at the vets, so I go to my sock drawer and count my money from Max’s Meats. Fifty-six dollars. I know exactly what to get him and I’ve seen it at the general store for fifteen bucks. Die Hard. The 25th anniversary edition.

Shannon hasn’t been invited to the party. You don’t invite girls to sleepover parties, even if they can throw and catch a ball as well as anyone. Maybe because of that if you’re a skinny, unco mongrel like Brandon. On the footy field he’s a specialist forward pocket, not because he can kick goals but because that’s where you always hide your worst player. His job is to lead his opponent away from our full-forward, Bucket Moloney, so Bucket can go one-on-one against the opposition full-back.

I shove a handful of two-dollar coins into my pocket, grab the treadly and head off to Shannon’s.
