CHAPTER TWELVE

JAIME SAT BACK, enjoying the feel of the sun on her face and the wind in her hair. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been on a boat instead of the island ferry, and she was determined to enjoy the day. Once they were past South Bass and the smaller islands the lake opened up. She could see the mainland to her left and to the right the faint outline of Pelee on the Canadian side of Lake Erie.

The nerves she’d experienced when Emmett had mentioned the trip faded as she relaxed against her seat. It was a gorgeous summer day, and she was with Emmett in the middle of a beautiful lake. There was nothing to be afraid of.

They skimmed past a few sailboats and waved to the passengers, but the motor was too noisy to do more than grin at one another as their sunglasses plastered to their faces. Jaime stood, keeping a firm grip on the bar to her left. Once away from the traffic of other boats, Emmett brought the boat to the plane level and throttled down slightly to conserve fuel. It was still too noisy to talk so Jaime settled for taking in the view.

The island had shrunk from the last time she checked, but the fact didn’t bother her on this two-seater boat the way it had when they’d been surrounded by people on the ferry. She pointed to a gull swooping down toward the water. The bird caught a small fish in its beak and swept back up into the sky.

Jaime relaxed in her seat, watching the water. Watching Emmett. Watching him watch the water. Mostly watching him. He was at ease out here in a way he wasn’t back on Gulliver. Not that he seemed stressed on the island, but there was a guard that always seemed to be up. As when Anna had been talking to him just as Jaime had arrived at the diner. There’d been a tense expression on his face, a tightness to his shoulders.

It could be that he needed time to get used to the differences between the small town where he grew up and the city where he lived now.

Maybe it wasn’t her place to analyze him. Maybe she should just enjoy the sun on her face, the warmth of the breeze and shut down a little. Her eyes drifted closed and the next thing Jaime knew the motor was throttled down. She opened her eyes as the boat passed Grosse Isle Township on the Detroit River and all too soon Emmett throttled even lower as they pulled into a marina.

They left the sandwiches in the cooler and called a cab to take them to the flooring outlet. Jaime didn’t resist when Emmett put her hand in his. She slid closer to him than necessary as the cab pulled away from the marina, all the while conscious of the connection between them. Felt the shift in his attention from watching the world outside the cab window to him watching her.
