Move the position so the bottom of the cylinder meets the bottom of the chess king

Panels - Perspective - Persp

Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and left click drag (Keep holding down the left mouse button) the mouse to move the view around and look at the base of the chess piece. You will do this every change or every few changes to evaluate your model and see that everything is working well.

Hold down the right mouse button over the cylinder so the menu comes up.

Keep holding down the right mouse button and select Object Mode. You will use this menu often when working in Maya.

Right Click - Object Mode to be able to manipulate the entire object
