Scene VIII

Gail

Thursday, Gail went for her morning run, while Jake did his stretches. She had asked him about his nightmare, encouraging him to share. He shook his head. Couldn’t or wouldn’t? she wondered as she loped along a trail that took her into the forests. She had shared hers, but it probably was pretty tame compared to his. She suspected the nightmare was much like the play. Talking about it might help, she thought, but then wouldn’t the play have done the same thing as talking? She didn’t know. Surely, the military had made him talk to a therapist about them. It wasn’t her right to push him.

But then she thought about the idea of a play about the nightmare of a play with nothing to say — her own nightmare — and she got excited about it. When she got back from her run, she pulled out her computer and wrote down some notes. She was so focused she didn’t even say hello to Jake, and was only vaguely aware of his amused smile as she wrote.

When she stopped writing, he teased her about her muse calling, and she laughed. She went in and took a shower. They had lunch at Rowan’s Grill, and then they spent the afternoon in the lawn chairs, reading, interspersed with conversation and looking out over the water.

That evening they took a picnic basket and a bottle of wine, and spent a couple of hours on the water.

The captain was a good guide. He pointed out deer and elk that came down to drink. Some beavers had built a home in one of the streams that poured into the lake. And at dusk, he pointed out a black bear along the water edge. Then he pointed the boat home, letting them enjoy the sunset off the stern of the boat.

“Thank you,” Gail told him. “I’ve been here a lot, and that’s the first bear I’ve seen.”

“And it was perfect,” Jake added. “We saw her from a safe distance.”

The captain laughed and waved them off. They walked back to their motel room, holding hands.

Gail pulled Jake into the bathroom with her. “A shower,” she said. “We know we can fit.”

“We do,” Jake agreed.

And there was nothing wrong with a tight fit in a shower, Gail decided. But even better was the lovemaking in a large bed afterwards. She loved the feeling of his body pressed against hers. The taste of his skin. The way he shivered when she kissed him along his jawline, and down his neck.

They took their time, no need to hurry. But Gail also felt like the clock in the back of her mind was ticking again. Savor this moment, she thought. There weren’t going to be many more of them.

The next day started with the same routine: Gail went for a run, then watched Jake do his stretches. She did like to watch him. He had a fine body, and watching him stretch out his back muscles was a pleasure. Afterwards, they went for a walk through town.
