That night, Tiber was unable to sleep. He had assumed he would doze off right away, considering the beating he had taken from Jamison. But bitterness added to his pain, and he tossed back and forth on his pallet. Why did he have to train with Jamison anyway? Aurelia had promised she would work with him. Maybe if he had practiced with her, he wouldn’t have given into the Shadows so easily.

His mind was moving at top speed, darting into one thought before he had finished thinking about another. He kept seeing Katania and her serious gaze, her long dark hair. How could the vision have seemed so real?

He briefly considered letting the grief over his family’s death rush over him, hoping it would crush him into slumber. He could picture his father and hear his laughter. He could see him holding a flame in his hand, trying to show Tiber how to make the same small flame. He could see his mother comforting him and putting salve onto the small burn he had accidentally given himself. “Burns come with this life, Tiberius,” she had said. “Eventually you’ll learn how to keep it from hurting.”

Tiber held out a flame in his hand, wondering if he would see his mother this time or maybe his father. Maybe Katania would appear again? He tried to concentrate and make the flame stronger, but as it grew, his vision only darkened. Frustrated, he made the flame blaze. But there was just an orange glow—and darkness. He grumbled to himself as the flame disappeared. It was stupid of him to think it would work.

Izzy moaned and rolled over from across the cave. Tiber tried again to get comfortable on his own pallet. He sank into the grief and pain from the day, letting it wash over him and pull him mercifully into sleep.
