Chapter 5

Saturday afternoon, and with little else to do, everyone settled down and watched sport on the television. I wasn’t much of a sport-orientated person, so I curled up in a corner and carried on with the book I had started a few days earlier. I managed to filter out the noise from the TV and the comments the others were making.

“Do you want dinner now?” Mark’s voice broke in on my literary daydream.

I looked over at the clock. It was a little past five.

“Okay, I’ll go see what we’ve got.”

“The boys said they’d make something.”

“Oh, right,” I said.

I could hear the clatter of pots and pans coming from the other room, along with the odd giggle from the chefs.

“Boys!” Mark called out. “Get your hands off each other and back onto the food.”

They laughed.

A short while later, Billy popped his head round the door to tell us the food was ready.

All four of us sat down to a meal of cottage pie, carrots, and peas. We’d had some minced beef in the freezer, and the boys must have used that as a base for the pie.

“This is great. Thank you,” I said.

Sam and Billy beamed at the praise.

Mark nodded. “Mind you, we already know Sam can cook because he made us breakfast a few times when he stayed with us.”

This brought up the subject of when Sam’s parents went away and he stayed with us.

“That’s when you two found out about each other, wasn’t it?” I asked.

Sam nodded. “I can still remember your face when you outed yourself and Mark to Billy. You could have fried eggs on your cheeks, they were glowing so much.”

I’d come home from the library for dinner and called out something sexy—more like stupid—to Mark, not knowing Billy was in the kitchen. I could see the humour in the situation now, but at the time I’d been pretty mortified.

“Because of that, I was able to find my Sam,” Billy said, wrapping an arm around his boyfriend.

“And I found you.” Sam kissed Billy.

“Not at the table, you’ll give me indigestion,” Mark said.

“Shut up. I think it’s lovely,” I said.

“The nights are getting colder,” I observed as we walked to the pub after dinner. “I think we should put the thicker duvet on the bed tonight.” I pulled up the collar of my coat.

Mark put an arm around my waist. There weren’t many streetlights, and few people were out and about.

After waiting for about ten minutes we managed to get a table in the children’s room.

The family who’d occupied the table previously had left when the older brother pushed his younger sister, making her cry.

“That’s it!” the father had slapped the side of the kid’s head, pushing him into his sister. “James, I’ve bloody well warned you for the last time, now we’re going home, and you can fucking forget about watching the bloody telly tomorrow, too.”

James had put up a protest, which was still in full flow as the father dragged him through the outside door.
