Chapter 17

Ben watched Lily leave in a taxi. His heart wrenched at the sight of her tears running down her face, and he feared he may have lost her. She looked absolutely distraught, and he had no idea why. What the hell? “Dammit.”

Nate whirled on him, pushed against his shoulder, and growled out loud, “What the hell did you do to my sister to make her cry?”

“Ben,” Rick called from a distance.

“The hell if I know. I’m just as upset and confused as you are,” Ben shouted back.

“Well, she was running from something, and she sure as hell didn’t want to be around you,” Nate yelled.

“Ben,” Rick said again, but a bit louder as he came closer.

“Yelling at me is not solving anything right now. We need to concentrate on finding out where Lily went,” Ben angrily explained.

Nate pushed Ben back a step with a threatening stance and yelled into his face, “So help me, if you had anything to do with hurting my sister tonight, I will rearrange your face.”

“I would like to see you try—and another thing—don’t ever push me again,” Ben warned.

Nate took a step toward Ben ready to throw the first punch, but Rick pushed Nate back. “Would you two stop arguing for a moment and listen to what I have to say?”

“What?” Nate and Ben shouted at Rick.

“This might explain why Lily was upset and took off.” Rick shoved a wrinkled piece of paper into Ben’s face.

“Amy said Lily was clutching it in her hands when she found her in the ladies room. Lily dropped it on the floor, thinking Amy didn’t notice, but she did and picked it up. Amy said she didn’t read it, but I did.” Rick narrowed his eyes at Ben. “It’s not good, not good at all.”

Great, Rick’s pissed at him as well. Ben snatched the paper out of Rick’s hands and read it. With each written word, Ben’s anger and fear rose. “That bitch.” In a deadly, low voice, “I’m going to ruin Heather for this.”

“Who the hell is Heather, and what does she have to do with hurting my sister?” Nate aggressively demanded.

“I think explanations should wait. We need to find Lily—now,” said Ben.

Nate moved into Ben’s space, poking his finger into his chest. “Explanations now, or I won’t help you find my twin sister.”

Ben moved closer to Nate, ready to brawl. Rick set his hands on their shoulders, trying to push them apart. Exasperated with both of them, Rick said, “Ben, you’re going to need Nate’s help to find Lily quickly. I don’t know how to explain it, but they have some kind of special connection because they’re fraternal twins. Nate, you need to back off just a bit. I think the most important thing right now is to find Lily. You know it’s not safe for her to be alone right now.”

Nate reluctantly nodded at Rick, acknowledging he was right.

Not wanting to alienate Nate, Ben knew it would be a good idea to come clean quickly with minimal information.
