The α constant is usually a scalar quantity. For most load cases, the normal derivative of a variable is equivalent to the flux of that variable.

For example, the normal derivative of a force is equivalent to the traction i.e. . The converse to a Neumann BC is called a no-flux BC as there is no flux associated with it. In the context of structural solid mechanics, this type of boundary condition is prescribed by imposing a uniform traction vector, T, over the external boundaries of the RVE. An illustration of this type of boundary condition is shown in Fig. 8.4.
