In the early hours of the morning, Mr Collins sat up at his writing desk in the small study. He had one candle burning. Though its light was small, it would suffice for him to write an urgent warning to Lady Catherine.

My esteemed and gracious patroness, Lady Catherine,

I am grieved indeed to inform you that one of my sisters-in-law, in all her innocence, has made a grave mistake. As you told me of the intended joining of your daughter, Lady Anne, and your nephew, Mr Darcy, I thought it my duty to warn you of my suspicions. I confess I am loath to do so but find that my duty to you, my most respected patroness, is far more important than mere familial bonds by marriage.

As I was careful to observe them this evening, I believe Miss Bennet to be forming an attachment with Mr Darcy that is both unwise and dangerous to her future happiness. She has told me before that she is in love with your nephew — most ardently — and knows that there is nothing to be done. However, I believe my sister-in-law is in great jeopardy of falling prey to these notions once again, as Mr Darcy and she have been thrown together quite by accident.

I beg your advice on how to handle the matter at hand. You will know what is best to do to protect them both.
