3. Use the âChange Fieldsâ batch edit feature in EndNote to add a label to each reference relating to the search it was retrieved withâso, in this case, Similar Research.
4. Run the remaining three searches (refinement, reduction, and replacement), repeating steps 1â3. This results in a library in which each reference has one label: Similar Research, Refinement, and so on.
5. If using a second database repeat steps 1â4, importing the references into the same EndNote library as the first search.
6. Use the âFind Duplicatesâ feature to remove duplicate citations across the entire library. Note this will remove duplicates across labels. By default, EndNote will keep the first article added to a library, so if an article is brought in under both the refinement and reduction searches, the record you added second will be removed. If you want to keep all articles, skip this step.
7. Use the EndNote âSubject Bibliographyâ tool to create a bibliography. We created and use a customized IACUC output style that includes the abstract and the database the reference came from. The Subject Bibliography allows you to sort by label, so that the references are sorted into their categoriesâSimilar Research or each of the 3Rs.
8. At the top of this citations document we note that overlap is to be expected and that researchers may find articles about reduction in the refinement section and vice versa.
9. Email the document with the citations along with a document for each database that details the search strategy used. Researchers can then upload the search strategies into the protocol system, and use the citations to both adjust their protocol and write their 3R narrative. We also send EndNote libraries or ris files on request.
