Finding Washington
What has happened to us? Even though we aren't perfect, the United States is still a beacon of hope to people all around the globe. Although we have people in our country that have romanticized socialism and totalitarianism, the simple truth is that no one is trying to break into those countries. Cuba, located ninety miles from Florida, is a communist country. No one that lives in Florida is trying to turn a 1952 Chevrolet Bel Air into a boat to make it to Cuba. Yet, Cubans will try almost anything, regardless of how dangerous it is, to get to America. We still have what it takes to inspire, but I'm afraid that our window is closing. But it doesn't have to.
In order to find Washington and become an inspiration to the next generation, we must make some changes. First, and this is important, put your phone down! Turn Netflix off! Get off Facebook! For the love of all that is holy, get off Facebook! Our addiction to technology is real. It's not funny anymore, and I am no exception. One of the negative consequences of our addiction is that we aren't engaging in activities that inspire. Like robots, we go to work, come home, and veg out until we fall asleep with our phone in our hand, and then get up and do it again the next day. You and I aren't going to inspire anyone watching TikTok videos.
Secondly, it's time to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice. I know we all sacrifice for our kids, but I'm talking about a different level of sacrifice. I'm talking about using your Saturdays for more than mowing the lawn. There are probably hundreds of charities in your community that would do backflips if they got a phone call asking when and where you can volunteer. We can genuinely inspire the next generation if we begin spending our time for the good of others.
Oh, and take the kids with you when you volunteer. Look, I know your precious babies are going to complain. That's what kids do. They complain about how unfair life is, and, frankly, I would be disappointed and surprised if they didn't. However, something will happen to your kids over time. They will learn that there is joy in serving, and they will be inspired by you and the people they meet along the way to be better and do better. I don't have a complicated algorithm, folks. This isn't rocket surgery. The next generation will receive their inspiration from pop singers, actors, or influencers (whatever the heck that is) if we don't become the inspiration they are looking for. I'm providing the following list of charities as a way to get you stimulated to think about serving.
