We create our own suffering

At one of my workshops, a woman said that sometimes our mind can be our very own torture chamber. In this particular workshop, we were doing the final exercise, where people select an angel card and have it read for them by their partner. This woman was blown away when she selected a card that had special resonance in her own life. Her card read, ‘The burden of carting your past around has made you weary, Dear One. It’s time to set this burden down. Keep only the lessons and the love, and leave everything else behind. You don’t want it or need it, and it’s now gone.’

‘What’s been very helpful for me,’ she said, ‘is noticing that we create our own suffering. And when we’re suffering, it’s not what is meant for us, it’s just the way we’re thinking or what we’re feeling. I realise, because I’m very emotional, that I have been treating my feelings as if they were facts, and that’s created a lot of suffering for me. I stress, I actually stress. But the big lesson for me is that my feelings are not facts. This card is saying, “Pass it off to us, let us worry about it, let it go.”’

She is so right. While it’s part of our life goal to deal with what life throws at us, there are times when we create our own suffering by letting negative thoughts crowd into our mind. Recognising this is half the battle. It’s all up to us. We can decide not to allow our negative emotions, our baggage, to lead us away from the light. If you’re struggling with bad feelings, hand those feelings over to spirit, and feel your load lighten.
