Chapter Five

"Hello, darling, it is so good to see you!" Kathryn O'Hara pulled her youngest child to her and gave her an exuberant hug.

"Mama, I've missed you so much!"

"What about me? Do I get a hug and kiss, too?"

"Of course you do, Papa." She inhaled deeply of his manly fragrance. "It is so good to be home. Where are the brothers?"

"Jeffrey is already at the ranch, and Ward is coming in tomorrow with his family. Andrew is bringing a guest, and Jacob? Well, I'm sure he will show up before you leave. Jake is so hard to reach. How are you, dear?" her beloved papa questioned, trying to hide the pain in his eyes when he looked at her.

"I am fine, Papa," she lied.

"Just the one valise?" he asked as he always did.

"I don't have many needs, Papa."

"Of course not, child," he answered in agreement, and within minutes she was seated in the buggy and on her way home for her annual visit. Two weeks to store up enough memories for the coming year.

"Hey, sis, it's good to see you!" Jeff lifted her from the buggy and swung her around and around. "Guess who's here? Andy. He brought a guest with him, and guess what? It's not another priest. Thank God. I already have enough trouble watching my language in front of the two of you," Jeff teased her.

"You should watch your language anyway, Jeffrey," Kathryn scolded fondly, shaking her red head.

"It's hard to remember that when someone is trying to blow my head off, Ma," he replied, and then cringed when she blanched.

"Jeffrey!" John O'Hara promptly reminded his son of his manners.

"I'm sorry, Ma. That was just a poor attempt at humor. You know how nervous I get when the good kids come home to see you."

"Jeffrey," Kathryn whispered.

"Can't help it, Ma. After five years I still can't get used to seeing all the black." He took the valise, and then said, "May I escort you inside, Sister, dear?"

"There you are!" Andrew rushed forward to embrace his little sister. "Are you well, Sister?"

"I am fine, Father Andrew," she replied, and then asked, "I hear you brought a guest?"

"Yes. Sister Mary Elizabeth, may I present JT Zane? JT, my sister, Sister Mary Elizabeth."

JT watched as the dark brown eyes filled with horror, and felt as though he'd been sucker punched in the stomach.

"Hey, what is wrong with you two? Have you met before?" Andrew inquired, looking back and forth at the two people before him.

"I am sure your sister isn't used to meeting very many strangers, dear." Kathryn wrapped her arms protectively around her youngest child. "Come along, dear, and I will get you settled in your old room."

Sam followed her mother up the steps and wondered how long it would be before JT exposed her as a liar and a fraud.

"Dear, aren't you feeling well? Would you like for me to leave you alone so you can disrobe and lie down for a while?"

"Mama, I—"

"I know, dear. It's overwhelming to be home again after so long.
