Um, hardly the words of a patient man.

Yet the words are true. They pour out as Job’s lifeblood. He is unafraid to use them. Perhaps that’s because he’s at the near end to despair. But more likely it is because of the sort of man Job was—a person of integrity whose life reflected the words he prayed and whose words reflected his true spiritual state. While such prayers may make us uncomfortable, they do so because they are authentic cries from the depths of the heart. They show us, too, that it is okay to stop playing it safe in our relationship with God.

Of course, we might think, Well, that’s okay for Job to talk that way to God. He had some pretty good grievances. However, he does come across, justifiably perhaps, as a bit of a whiner. But Job’s not the only biblical character that addresses God as directly and honestly as we would address our spouse or best friend when they’ve let us down (not that Brent or Jennie’s spouses ever do!).

The psalmists often praise God as a being of justice and mercy. But when they look at injustice, they begin wondering. Many is the psalm that asks, basically, “What’s going on here?”

How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever?

How long will you hide your face from me?

How long must I wrestle with my thoughts

and day after day have sorrow in my heart?

How long will my enemy triumph over me?

Look on me and answer, LORD my God. (Psalm 13:1-3)
