Alex jumped when his phone rang. He picked it up and swiped his finger across the screen, answering DJâs call.
âHey, Iâve searched using the sketches that Kate helped us with. I think I found something.â DJ talked ninety miles a minute. âThere is a guy named Corey who matches the sketch. He owns a small house maybe three miles from you as the crow flies. Weâll go check out that place.â
âAny progress on the other guy?â
âMaybe. Corey was once arrested with a Jim, who favors the other sketch. Iâm texting you a picture. Have Kate take a look. If she recognizes the man, please let me know ASAP.â
âWill do.â Alex saved his script before walking away from the computer. A text notification popped up on the screen. He pulled up his messages and called out to Kate. âDJ sent a photo. Have a look.â He strode out of the office and found her in the kitchen.
The cabin smelled wonderful. Heâd been so immersed in his work he hadnât noticed the delicious scent wafting from the kitchen.
Kate pulled a tray of cookies out of the oven. âLetâs see it.â When he showed her the photo, she dropped the tray onto the stovetop and wrapped her arms around herself. âThatâs him.â
Alex felt like a heel for being so thoughtless and sticking the picture in her face. He hadnât even warned her that it was a possible suspect. âI shouldnât have been so casual about it. Iâm sorry.â
She sat down and covered her face with her hands. Seeing the picture of the kidnapper surely brought back memories of the night in the closet. Alex stood next to her and quietly texted DJ one word: kidnapper.
Alex poured two glasses of milk and put a few cookies on a plate. Returning to the spot next to her, he set the snack on the table. Without a word, she leaned on him. Minutes ticked by with her shoulder against his hip, her head on his waist.
His fingers buried in her curls, he rubbed her neck. He hated to see her upset but relished the fact that she rested on him for comfort. Feelings and longings stirred inside him. Youâve only known her a few days. Slow down.
She straightened and wiped her face. âSo they know who he is now.â She sighed deeply. âHave they arrested him?â
âHis name is Jim. They havenât arrested him yet, but at least they know who theyâre looking for now.â He was glad for the photo as well. Now he wasnât trying to protect her from an unknown enemy. The kidnapper had a face. âWhat do you say we drive into San Antonio and go up to the hospital? Weâll see Tom and Meg and then have dinner here in Kerrville. LaFours has good shrimp.â Alex would be surprised if they found those men at that house. Surely, by now, they were long gone, running from consequences.
âSounds good. Let me get cleaned up.â She turned off the oven before padding off to the bedroom.
